Cleaning Tips, Tricks, and Recipes
There are many ways to save money by making your own products, and most of the time they are much safer than store bought products. Here are just a few recipes that I have found that have helped me save a little money.
Liquid laundry detergent
1 Quart water (boiling)
2 Cups bar soap (grated)
2 Cups Borax
2 Cups Washing Soda
Add finely grated bar soap to the boiling water and stir until soap is melted.
You can keep on low heat until melted. Pour the soapy water mixture into a large, clean pail and add the Borax and Washing Soda., Stir well until all is dissolved.
Add 2 gallons of water, stir until well mixed. Cover pail and use 1/4 cup for each load of laundry. Stir the soap each time you use it (will gel). I like using the 5 gallon buckets, or you can make the mixture and put it in an old detergent bottle.
Powdered Laundry Detergent
2 Cups Fels Naptha Soap (Finley Grated) I also like the Zote soap, it smells good!
1 Cup Washing Soda
1 Cup Borax
Mix all ingrediants and store in an air tight container. Use 2 Tablespoons per full load.
Soap Scum remover
Pour 1/2 Cup of boiling water and 1 1/2 cups of white household vinegar and a squirt of liquid dishsoap, into a spray bottle. Spray the area generously with mixture and allow to soak for 10 minutes, Scrub clean with a nylon scrubber. Then rinse well with water, repeat if necessary. Avoid using on tile and grout, the vinegar may affect the color.
Spray surface with hot water then sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda on a large damp sponge. Scrub surface in a cicular motion to lift the grime (baking soda is a gentale abrasive) You can also make a soft scrub cleaner with 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup liquid dish detergent and between 1/8 to 1/2 cup of vinegar.
